2025 has been a challenging year for many. One in five British Columbians are struggling with food insecurity, and rising costs continue to affect everyone. In March 2025, food banks across Canada saw over 2 million visitsthe highest number ever recorded. Here in Golden and Area A, the demand for food support has steadily increased over the past several years.
This year, weve supported an average of 201 households each month. So far this year, 700 residents - a number that represents 17.6% of Goldens population - have accessed our Food Bank program. Over 2000 hampers filled with fresh produce, meat, dairy, dry goods, toiletries, and baby essentials have been distributed this year. This is food that otherwise wouldnt have been on the table.
The Golden Food Bank is a nonprofit charity that relies on community support to run its programs. We do not recieve on-going core funding, meaning we rely on donations to keep the doors open, the lights on, and our community fed.
Hosting your own fundraiser or creating a Virtual Food Drive is an easy and meaningful way to help. In just a few minutes, you can set up a donation page, rally friends, family, or coworkers, and get food directly to people who need it. Do you have something you could raffle off as a prize for donations? Can you offer to match donations with employees or friends? Can you challenge another business/group to join a team?
